Originally from Shanghai, China, Mary finds her heritage to be a source of inspiration for her paintings. Educated in the strict traditional Chinese educational system she focused on the sciences while studying Chinese painting and calligraphy on her own. Before coming the United States, she admired the ancient Chinese painters but found her true voice for painting when she discovered the Western artists. It was the realism of Rembrandt and Velazquez—her particular favorites—that she found to be the artistic style that she had been looking for. Mary chooses to express herself through this particular style of painting.
In 1998, Qian graduated from there and has won many art awards including a merit award at the 2000 Springville Museum of Art "Spring Salon"
The prestigious Salon International exhibition recognized Mary Qian with the “Best in Show” award in 2007. Mary is the cover artist for the January issue of Southwest Art Magazine 2011.
